New Camera

Well, as I promised last time, here are some photos taken from the house with my new Nikon D40x with a Nikkor 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S VR lens...

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Dark-eyed (Oregon) Junco

Anna's Hummingbird (yeah, I know, I needed to use the exposure compensation)

American Crow

Brown Creeper

American Goldfinches

Lesser Goldfinches

Black-capped Chickadee

Chestnut-backed Chickadee

Bushtit

Townsend's Warbler

Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warbler

Varied Thrush

I'd say those are just a wee bit better than what my PowerShot SD450 could do, doncha think?

Not too much has changed over the past weeks, except for the notable Varied Thrushes last Saturday (two males, one female).  Unfortunately, I haven't seen them since.  Apparently the lack of snow up in the Cascades and Coastal Range has given them less incentive to forage for food on the valley floor.  Downy Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers have been around in higher number, as have Lesser Goldfinches (maybe two at a time once a day now).  However, the large (10-30) flocks of American Goldfinches have been few and far between over the past week and a half or so.  Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that two Pine Siskins (one male, one female) were feeding with a flock of American Goldfinches the morning after my last post.  Too bad that I didn't have my new equipment at that time.

Hope to see more Varied Thrushes and Pine Siskins soon... and maybe a surprise like Golden-crowned Sparrows or - gasp! - Evening Grosbeaks.  I can always dream.  But at least I now have the equipment to snap good photos if they DO stop by.
